Introduction and Conclusion to Food Preservation

Introduction

Your refrigerator lurks in the corner, its motors humming away, pumping refrigerant through a network of insulated tubes.  Like an overly dependable guy trapped in the friend zone, it's easy to take for granted.  It's always there, offering cold refreshment.  Although it's easy to take for granted, the refrigerator is a monumental addition to our lives.  The refrigerator, and the often accompanying freezer, are the dominant means of modern food preservation.   The refrigerator isn't just a convenience, it's essential to keeping food fresh and edible for much longer.  Food preservation, however, doesn't begin with the refrigerator.  For thousands of years, humans have needed to find ways to keep food from spoiling.  It hasn't always been as easy as slipping food into an always-waiting box.  Ancient food preservation techniques were challenging. For example, in Europe, you can only plant for around 6 months a year, this makes living more difficult. It was difficult to survive, the only way to maintain food clean, edible, and fresh was by preserving it by various techniques or traditional methods. Jellying the fruit was very common, as well as candying it. Drying the meat was a time-consuming process but useful, smoking was simple and it was useful to keep bacteria away from the meat. Pickling the vegetables was also very common, because it maintains it clean and fresh. Submerging them in oil and vinegar helps preserve the vegetables for a long period of time. Recipes to preserve meats, vegetables, and fruits are traditional methods of keeping bacteria away from food.

Conclusion

Since the Middle Ages, food preservation is widely used around the world. People believed that if you left dirty clothes in a corner, rats will magically start growing in that place. In these time, people did not knew about germs or bacteria, they had no knowledge on it. Today, germs and bacteria are widely known as hazardous and tremendously dangerous. Our dependance on refrigerators and freezers is higher day to day. We need to learn alternative ways to preserve the food, keep it out of bacteria, and avoid losing its flavor and texture. It was shown above several traditional ways to preserve meats, fruits, and vegetables for a long time, and how keep them away from bacteria. You might find preserving food as a boring process, but once you start making it you do not want to stop. After experiencing the processes of food preservation, it was discovered that it is a fun, enjoyable, and cool process. It was learned that specific or appropriate utensils and cooking "machines" could improve food quality and duration by several processes. If the appropriate equipment is used, the results will be much smoother and the food will taste even more delicious. While conducting these food preservation processes it was necessary to apply what we learned from the Food Safety Research paper (posted one week ago). Food preservation is basically the application of sanitation, hygiene, cleanliness in the food to avoid its contamination with bacteria. By non time consuming and simple steps you can enrich the flavor of foods, maintain them clean, and make them last longer.
